Concrete pool decks in Highland IN - a deck that grips when wet and sheds water

Old deck slick, cracked or too hot underfoot? We build pool decks that grip bare wet feet and send water away from the house.

A rectangular swimming pool is surrounded by gray concrete decking and coping, with lounge chairs and a black fence beyond.

What goes into a new pool deck in Highland?

A concrete pool deck in Highland is the slab around your pool that everyone walks on wet and barefoot, so we build it to grip, stay bearable in the sun and send water away from your house and your pool.

Most calls start with a deck that's gotten slick, cracked or sunk at one corner, or a new pool that needs a surface around it. The price moves with the size and shape of the deck, the finish you pick, whether an old deck has to come out and how much work the base and drainage need. The schedule turns on the weather and on curing, the days the slab needs to gain strength before anyone walks on it. When I come out, the written estimate spells out what your price includes.

Why Highland homeowners hire us for pool decks

I care most about the parts of a pool deck you can't see later, the base, the drainage and the timing of the pour, because those decide how it holds up.

  • I walk every job

I look at your yard myself, then stay on site with our crew through the prep, the pour and the finish.

  • Pouring since 2017

We've run this business since 2017, and I learned finishing under an old-school finisher before that.

  • Licensed and insured, ask anyone

We're licensed and insured, which is worth asking any crew that's going to work between your pool and your house.

  • Base work comes first

If the budget gets tight, I'd cut the finish before the packed base, because a pretty top on loose dirt settles.

  • Straight answers on your plan

I'd rather tell you a layout won't work and why than build something that lets you down a few winters later.

How we build concrete pool decks

The right deck for your pool comes from how it's used, so I start with grip under wet bare feet, then how hot the finish gets in the sun, then where the water drains.

  • A new deck around your pool

We dig out and pack the base so the deck doesn't settle with the dirt, then pick a finish with you for grip and heat before color. Before the pour I'll show you the control joints, cuts that give the slab a planned place to crack, laid out around the curves, drains and corners so no odd narrow panel cracks on its own.

  • Steps and slabs around the pool

Most decks tie into a back door or a slope, and we can build concrete steps in the same finish so the walk from the house to the water grips the whole way. If you're adding a pool house or a pad for the pump and filter, our slab foundation building work gives it a packed base and a level slab beside the deck.

What happens when you call about a pool deck in Highland?

We plan your deck around how your household uses the pool, and you'll know what's included before anything gets dug out.

  1. You get in touch

Call (219) 533-1721 or use the form. I answer most of the calls myself, and we'll set a time for me to come out.

  2. I walk the yard

I look at the ground, where the water runs now and how you use the pool, down to where the chairs and the grill go.

  3. Your written estimate

You get a written estimate that spells out what's in the price, from the base work to the finish and the joint layout.

  4. Pour and walkthrough

I'm on site with our crew from the base prep to the final finish, and before we leave I go over how to care for the new deck.

Pool deck questions we hear

What concrete finish is least slippery around a pool?

A textured finish usually holds wet bare feet better than a smooth one, such as a broom finish, where we drag fine ridges across the surface for grip, or exposed aggregate. Broom, textured, exposed aggregate, coatings, overlays and decorative finishes all differ in grip and in how hot they get, and very dark finishes can get uncomfortable in full sun. That's why we weigh grip and heat with you before we talk about looks.

Will a concrete pool deck hold up to Highland winters and ice melt?

It holds up far better when the mix is air-entrained, meaning tiny air bubbles are mixed in to give freezing water room, because that concrete resists several hundred percent more freeze and thaw cycles than concrete without it. The same air also cuts down the scaling, the flaking top, that ice-melt chemicals cause. Before any pour, it's a fair question to ask whether the mix is air-entrained.

How much does a concrete pool deck cost per square foot?

Installing a concrete pool deck across the US usually costs about $10.10 to $12 per square foot, which is a national starting point and not our price. Your number in Highland moves with the deck's size and shape, the finish, any old deck coming out and the base and drainage work. The written estimate puts your figure on paper.

How often do you need to recaulk a pool deck expansion joint?

One maker's guide says to check the expansion joint, the caulked gap where the deck meets the pool edge, every year and to repair or replace the caulk whenever it cracks, pulls away or breaks down. By that guide, most elastomeric caulks, the stretchy kind used in joints, last five to ten years. Before we leave, I'll show you how to check yours.

How do I make sure water drains away from my pool deck?

Slope the deck so water runs away from the house and, depending on the design, toward or away from deck drains, without carrying dirty runoff back into the pool. At the visit I watch where water runs now, because a deck that falls toward the house sends every splash and storm to your foundation.

What causes a concrete pool deck to crack or sink?

Most cracking and sinking comes from a base that was raked level instead of dug out and packed, so the slab settles with the dirt, or from joints cut late or skipped, so it cracks where nobody chose. A pour in midday heat can also leave a weak, dusty top, which is why we plan the pour around the heat of the day.

Concrete pool decks in Highland and the cities nearby

Permit rules for a pool deck differ from one city to the next, so I don't assume either way, and we check with that city's building office before we set a date. If your job needs a permit, we take care of the paperwork and line up the inspections with that office. The concrete mix should suit the weather and exposure a deck faces too, so the mix for your deck is a choice made for winters here and the ice melt that gets tracked onto it, which is why the air-entrained question above matters.

We're based in Highland and work in the cities around it on both sides of the Indiana and Illinois line, and we see the same mix of backyard pools and tired older decks on jobs in Munster and Lansing.
