Concrete driveway building in Highland IN - a slab that holds up to Indiana winters
Cracked, chipping or sinking driveway? We build a new one with the right mix, a packed base and a pour timed around the weather.

What goes into building a new concrete driveway in Highland?
Concrete driveway building in Highland, IN means clearing out the old surface or the bare ground, packing a solid base, pouring a new exterior slab and giving it time to cure, which is the wait while it hardens enough to take your car. What you end up with is a new driveway that sheds water and stands up to winter.
Most calls start with an old driveway that's cracked, sinking or chipping, or one where water pools by the garage after every rain. The price moves with the size, whether the old slab has to come out, how much base work your ground needs and the finish you pick, and the schedule turns mostly on the weather, because I'd rather move a date than pour ahead of a hard freeze. The written estimate from my visit puts your own figure on paper, along with what it covers.

Ways we build a concrete driveway
I start by asking what you'll park on it and looking at how water moves across your lot, because those two things decide the base, the slope and which finish makes sense.
What happens after you call about a new driveway in Highland?
We plan the job around how you use your driveway and around the weather, so you know what's happening before any truck pulls up.

I walk the job
I look at the ground, where the water runs and what you'll park on the driveway, because those decide the base and how the slab should slope.

How much does a new concrete driveway cost in Highland, IN?
There's no set price, because the cost turns on the size of the driveway, whether old concrete has to be torn out and how much base work your ground needs. Extra width, drainage fixes or a stamped border add to it, while a plain broom finish keeps it lower. Call (219) 533-1721 and I'll put your figure in writing after I've walked it.
What is the best concrete for a driveway that won't flake in winter?
Dense, good quality concrete with entrained air, tiny bubbles worked into the mix that give freezing water room to expand, is the best defense against scaling, the flaking that peels off a driveway's top layer. Whoever you hire, ask whether the mix they plan is dense, good quality concrete with entrained air. Ask too how they'll install and cure the slab, because good work at both steps also cuts down on scaling.
Is late fall a good time to pour a concrete driveway in Indiana?
It can be done, but industry guidance urges caution with pours in late fall, winter and early spring, because a freeze shortly after the pour can damage concrete that's still saturated with water. That's why I go over the forecast for the days after the pour with you before we book a date.
Which deicers are safe to use on a new concrete driveway?
None in the first winter, so plan on shoveling instead, then use deicers in moderate amounts after that. Keep ammonium sulfate, ammonium nitrate and magnesium-based salts off it in every season, because they're chemically aggressive and eat away at concrete surfaces. Using as little deicer as you can over the years also lowers the chance of scaling, and we plan that first winter's ice care with you before we book.
How long does it take before I can drive on a new concrete driveway?
You're off the driveway from tear-out until the concrete has cured enough to carry a car, and you can usually walk on it well before you can drive on it. Cool weather slows curing, so I give you the dates for your slab when we set the pour.
Will a new concrete driveway crack like my old one?
Concrete can still crack, but a well built driveway cracks where we plan it to instead of across the middle. We dig out and pack the base so the slab doesn't settle with the dirt, and we cut control joints, straight grooves that give the slab a line to crack along, while the concrete is fresh so they're in place before it starts to shrink.
Concrete driveway building on Highland's wet ground
Across Lake County, only about 22% of the land drains well, 56% stays wet for long stretches and groundwater comes within two feet of the surface under 58% of it. Those are county-wide shares, not a reading of your yard, but they explain why so many driveways around here settle and hold puddles. So we dig out soft soil and pack the subgrade, the ground the slab sits on, and set the slope so water runs away from your house before any concrete goes down.
We're based in Highland and work in the cities around it on both sides of the Indiana and Illinois line, and we run into the same wet ground on jobs in Munster and Griffith. Bring up anything you've noticed about your own lot, like water that sits by the garage, when I come out for the estimate.
